1. What do you need to complete a scholarship
a. Essay / Personal Statement
b. 2 or 3 Letters of recommendation
c. Transcripts (GED, High School or College)
d. Other items as requested by the scholarship criteria
2. When to Apply for Scholarship
a. You can apply for scholarships all year round however;
b. Many scholarships open their applications in December and January and closed their applications by
June 1st (if not earlier) and award for the following fall and spring semesters
3. Where to Find Scholarships
a. First check with your school’s website to see what scholarships are available for students at the
school you are going to attend
b. Internet sites that specialize in Scholarships (beware of scam websites)
c. Businesses
d. Professional Organizations
e. Magazines
f. Clubs (VFW, Elks, etc)
g. Employers
h. Friends and Family
i. Scholarship Books (available at your local library, and EOC office)
4. How to Apply for Scholarships
a. Each scholarship has a list of criteria and are looking for a specific type of applicant
b. This scholarship criteria could be based on one or more of the following
Merit, Gender, Age, Religious affiliation, Ethnicity, Hobbies, Career Goals, Organization
Affiliation, First Generation to Attend College, Financial Need, Talent, Military Career, ETC.
c.Apply for those scholarships which fit the criteria or profile of the person for which the scholarship
Is seeking
5. How Scholarships Award Funds to Students
a. A scholarship committee selects scholarship applicants based on how well they meet the particular
scholarship criteria.
b. The essay / personal statement is an important piece in how the committee makes its decision
c. While some scholarships are highly competitive, others have relatively few applicants
d. Applying to many Scholarships increases your chances of being awarded a scholarship(s)
e. Scholarship funds may range from as little as $100.00 to as much as many thousands of dollars.
